The Master's Church

Our Story

Our History

In God’s amazing grace, He providentially worked in the lives of many families to bring us together for such a time as this to plant a purely biblical New Testament Church. This is what God does generation after generation. He prepares the hearts of His people and their circumstances to bring together a body of believers to glorify His name. There is no other way to explain The Master’s Church. God moved individually on dozens of people’s hearts to desire a church that is established solely on the Bible. That meant years of frustrations and struggles in churches that were run by the traditions of men, but those were trials we needed for our growth and for His glory. Now, God is doing something marvelous!

It all started in 1997, when God led me to start a Bible study in Upstate New York. This study exploded with young people coming from many different churches just to study the Bible and have fellowship with like-minded people. I was teaching verse-by-verse through the Book of Isaiah and was very intentional in making the Bible the center of what we did. My wife Rene was one of the special people who came to that study…and the rest is history! As the size of the group grew, a thought went through my head…“Is God calling me to plant a new church with these people?” While I believe the Lord put that desire in my heart, I knew I was just not ready; I needed theological training; I needed more maturity; I needed more battle scars before I was going to be ready for such a high calling. So I tucked it away in my heart and continued to teach the Bible and proceeded onto seminary.

About seven years later after seminary and experiencing unbiblical and man-centered churches, I explored planting a new church in the Upstate New York area. We began to meet week after week, planning and praying. However, I was fresh out of seminary and had little pastoral experience. After several weeks of prayer and counsel, wisdom told me that it was not in the Lord’s plan at that time to plant a church, so I put the brakes on. Then about two years later, a group of people were meeting and discussing a church plant in my hometown. Through some mutual friends, the group invited me into the discussion and desired for me to be the founding pastor. They had a dozen families or so and a lot of excitement was in the air. However, some key theological perspectives of those people were different from mine so I sensed the Lord’s prompting again to put the brakes on.

At that point I did not know if I would ever be involved in a church plant, but I prayerfully kept it before the Lord and was open to His timing. I would regularly ponder on what a church that was solely patterned after the Bible would look like if the Lord ever opened the door of opportunity. In the meantime, I went on…pastoring churches for seventeen years where I really found out about the traditions of men and it grieved my heart greatly. Then, in the mysterious and miraculous providence of God, He blasted open doors and brought His plan of a new church plant to fruition at lightning speed! It is staggering to know that God had this planned all along for The Master’s Church to begin meeting on June 21st, 2020.

This church plant is a testimony to God’s wonderful grace, mercy and providence, which has been so apparent in these early days. God in His timing has brought multiple families locally and around the country whose desire was simply to be part of a God-glorifying, Christ-centered, Bible-driven church. Each family has a story to tell. Each family has a testimony that resembles mine. God truly is awesome! We would love for you to be part of this great move of God in the Kingsport area. If you have ever wanted to be involved in a church that unashamedly bases everything it does on the text of sacred Scripture, then The Master’s Church is for you!

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head over all. -1 Chronicles 29:11
